Square stitch base earrings
Level Beginner

Supplies:

1 short tube of Japanese size 11 seed beads
1 short tube of 4mm Japanese square beads in 2 different colors
1 #10 beading needle
1 bobbin of size “D” Nymo thread or size “ AA” Super-Lon thread
1 pair of ear wires
2 6-mm jump rings

2 medium sized crystals.

Step 1: (Picture 1) Start with opening the jump rings with the chain nose pliers and threading the ring through a  4-mm Japanese square bead.  Close the jump rings. Set them aside for later  (Pic 1)

Step 2: (Pictures 2 through 7) Cut 1 yard of thread and string on a “Stopper” bead by looping the thread through the bead, I just use a Japanese 11.  (Pic 2)  Now string on 3 square beads in the main color (color A)  Slide these down to the “stopper” bead.  Pick up another color A bead then needle through the last bead in the row going towards the needle (Pic 3)  Now needle through the bead you just added below this main row bead.  (Pic 4) Next pick up a color “B” bead and take the needle through the middle bead on the top row like you did before, (Pic 5) the needle through the color B bead (Pic 6).  Now pick up another A bead and needle through the last remaining bead in the original row. (Pic 7).  Once you go back through the bead you just added, you have now completed 2 rows.  I like to

Reinforce my work at this point by just going back through the rows with my needle and thread a couple of times, making sure to end up wear I started, this way I can add on the last row.

Step 3: (Pictures 8 through 10) Pick up a color a bead and again needle through the bead in the row up above going in the direction of the needle (Pic 8).  Repeat step 2 until the row is complete then again reinforce your work (Pic 9).  One way to do a strong reinforcement in beads with larger holes is to take your needle and thread and go underneath the  loops of thread at the edges of your work, it keeps the reinforcement tight and helps to keep tails from pulling out of your work (pic 10)

Step 4: (Pic 11 & 12)  Attaching the jump rings is simple. If you need a new thread make sure to secure into the work you have done by  working it into your piece.   Make sure your needle and thread are coming out of one side of your square.  String on 7 size 11 seed beads (Pic 11)  Needle through the square bead that is strung onto a jump ring, pick up 7 more seed beads then needle through the opposite end of the square.  (Pic 12)  Simply reinforce this by taking the needle and thread and go back through the seed beads and squares a couple of more times.

Step 5: (pictures 13 & 14) Now you can attach the pretty little crystal on the other side of the “Computer Chip.”  This time pick up 6 seed beads, needle through the crystal then pick up 6 more seed beads and needle through the last square on the opposite side.  (Pic 13)  reinforce this end by going through it with the needle and thread a couple of times.  Now using the chain nose pliers, gently open the ear wires to the side (pulling up towards you)  and attach the jump ring!

Try creating these in different colors or add charms at the end for a more personalized pair of earrings!
